Noémi Büchi: «Paroxysm» (2022)
2-channel electroacoustic composition
World premiere

«Paroxysm» is an exploration of rhythms and their importance to movement and harmony, and was conceived for the Australian label and sound art gallery Logform Editions. It is a 21-minute piece divided into two main parts. Starting from a puristic, dry rhythmic structure, the second part goes into a fusion of rhythm and harmony. The question that preoccupied Noémi Büchi during the creation process was, on the one hand, how these two main elements of music relate to each other and what forms they can create together, and on the other hand, how listening behavior adapts to and changes along with the compositional structure and sound events. Büchi’s sound world is characterised on the one hand by warm, dense, orchestral sounds and on the other hand by very filigree, dry, electroacoustic sounds. She works across genres, so that familiar elements from classical music, jazz, folk, and techno can be recognised in her musik. When listening to the sound structures she creates realistic shapes begin manifesting before the listener’s eyes. There is nature, and the world can be heard, made of plastic, metal, wood, water and earth. Following this approach, Büchi constantly tries to get as close as possible to the physical world through sound.

«What interests me in listening is precisely how the listening behaviour changes according to the sounding happening. I find it fascinating how sound guides us and how we unconsciously adapt our perception to the sound events. With Deep Listening, one can consciously focus on such phenomena and suddenly explore and get to know previously unexplored things about the unconscious. It is as if one gets to know oneself in depth during this process, like in a deep meditation.» – Noémi Büchi / label: -OUS Records / Mixing and mastering by Manuel Oberholzer, VFBM, Fribourg
