| Description | Almost exactly four hundred years after her compatriot William Shakespeare, author Caryl Churchill, born in London in 1938, wrote a drama about a dystopian future in which war, oppression and uncertainty are omnipresent. Borders are challenged not only physically, but also morally and ideologically. The changing political and social circumstances influence the lives of the characters – similar to how climate change, economic interests and geopolitical decisions are redefining borders in the real world. Perverse war logic sums up Macbeth as follows: ‘I am in blood / Stepped in so far that, should I wade no more, / Returning were as tedious as go o'er.’ Dorothea Tieck translated this in 1833 as: ‘I have stepped so deep into blood / That if I were to stop wading now, / Returning would be as difficult as going through.’ In Far Away, written in 2000, it sounds like this: ‘The rats are bleeding out of their mouths and ears, which is good, and so were the girls by the side of the road.’ |
