BiographySELECTED COMPOSER FOR THE 2021 SONIC MATTER_LISTENING LOUNGE

Charles Uzor was born in 1961 in Udo Mbaise, Nigeria. In 1968, during the Biafra war, he came to Switzerland. Studied oboe and composition in Bern, Zurich, Rome, London, graduating in 2005 from Goldsmith College, University of London with a dissertation on melody and inner time consciousness. 

In his recent works Uzor deals with the phenomena of identity, deception and nature. He is creating the Mimicri cycle and the works Mothertongue, Varek and spleen/mimicri. In Nri/mimicri for percussion quartet, ondes martenot and tape, bird songs and aerial acoustics are deepened by up to eight octaves and imitated by the ondes martenot. In 2019 and 2021 Charles Uzor received the Werkbeiträge für Musik from the city and canton of St. Gallen. In 2019/2020, the cycle Mothertongue, as well as 8'46'' George Floyd in memoriam were premiered at the Bern Music Festival and Konserthuset Stockholm. In 2021 the works Hier in diesem zierl'chen Prunkgebäude (Festival Rümlingen), bodycam. exhibit 3 (Salzburg, Vienna), To Radiophono (St. Gallen) and Qualia (Gothenburg) were premiered. He has been directing Contrapunkt.new art music since 2021.
