| Biography | Aurélie Nyirabikali Lierman (Rwanda/Belgium) studied audiovisual art and vocal jazz in Brussels and Louvain and continued her education with a master’s in Composition and a minor in Vocal Art at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague. For several years, Lierman has worked as a radio maker and journalist for Flemish radio. Since January 2020, she has been residing in Rotterdam and working from her studio in the renovated art complex De HBS on the «’s-Gravendijkwal». Primarily fascinated by the narrative power of abstract sound and music, Lierman incorporates dramatic and documentary elements into a structure of musical composition (or vice versa). Her work is multidisciplinary spanning radio art, installation, performance, voice art and composition. Her extensive collection of unique field recordings and soundscapes from the countryside and the cities of present-day East Africa serves as an ongoing inspiration for her work. She transforms the collected sounds and sculpts them into what she describes as «Afrique Concrète», a hybrid form of Afro-European music theatre. With «Umva!» she aims to further deepen and refine this expressive form. |
