| Description | The Six Tones explore the legacy of so-called yellow music, popular music from the south of Vietnam which developed in the hybrid culture of colonial time Saigon, developing on the hot music scene in the wartime. When the war ended, many of the famous singers and songwriters were spread across the world, as it developed into the iconic expression of the Vietnamese diaspora. This concert presents a series of experimental recompositions of this music, setting original songs in dialogue with traditional Vietnamese and experimental music forms. Yellow music is a Vietnamese pop genre that emerged during the years when the country was divided. In 1975, it was banned as «decadent». Artist-in-residence Nguyễn Thanh Thủy grew up in Vietnam with a variety of musical influences and has researched the significance of Yellow Music as a source of identity for the Vietnamese diaspora in her adopted home of Sweden. Along with her ensemble The Six Tones, which combines traditional and experimental approaches to Vietnamese and European music, she reinterprets Yellow Music songs from the perspective of her own personal history.
