HOW TO MAKE MUSIC WITH YOUR FRIENDS IN A CATASTROPHE

Between pandemic-related border closures, extreme weather conditions, world climate reports and a steady increase in political instability around the globe, the recent past has challenged us to rethink our relationships with each other and with our environment, and to reconsider our visions for the future. Over two mornings, the symposium of the SONIC MATTER Festival will offer participants and audiences a space in which they can together engage in reflection: How can sustainability, permaculture, upcycling and local thinking change artistic practices? Conversely, how can making music contribute to a sustainable society?
On the first morning, artists who have engaged specifically with these issues will present examples from their own work, and will open up the discussion as to how sustainable approaches and musical practices can influence each other.
The second morning will first offer short contributions from experts in sustainable cultural production, after which a World Café will be opened. Here, participants will be able to address the possibilities offered by cultural practitioners and discuss suggestions and demands from the audience on how musical practices might help to create a more sustainable life.
