RADIOPHONIC MONDAYS PRESENTS SOUNDARTISTS ITZA GARCIA (MX) AND ERNST VAN DER LOO (NL/NO)

This last RADIOPHONIC MONDAY before the summer break is dedicated to two musicians, 2023 artists in residence at our partner institutions ICST (Institute for Computer Music and Sound Technology) of the Zurich University of Arts. Their research in the domain of time, particularly in relation to the work of the Mexican composer Itzá García, and in the domain of space, as with the Dutch composer Ernst van der Loo, is illustrated in the collection of compositions presented here.

In his work Ernst van der Loo focuses mainly on spatial audio compositions for fixed media, using techniques like higher order ambisonics and wavefield synthesis. In composing music in a spatial environment, the composers states „we are able to approach the auditory illusions experienced during this state of mind. These illusions are de-facto not stereo or mono. We are hearing those illusions in a space, be it the room we are in or the room we think we are in, in that particular moment“. For the best listening experience of binaural audio, we recommend to listen with headphones.

Itzá García’s “Miniatures” are a series of short electroacoustic studies, composed and programmed in 2021, as a self-challenge to compose small pieces in SuperCollider every morning for the entire month of May. These little pieces use additive synthesis, algorithmic composition, and unconventional tunings, which offered a way to play with fluid textures and interesting sonorities.
