ON AIR January 3, 2022 00:00-23:59
RADIOPHONIC MONDAYS featuring sound and radio artists Claudio Landolt (CH), Hildegard Westerkamp (DE/CA) and Ludwig Berger (DE).
SONIC MATTER’s first RADIOPHONIC MONDAY of 2022 begins with three remarkable artists each with a keen and critical ear and understanding of our natural environment.
Hildegard Westerkamp, a pioneering voice in radio art, acoustic ecology and the practice of listening, draws in CRICKET VOICE the listeners attention both to the microscopic sonic nuances of the singing cricket as to an urban person’s experience in the desert. The work is based on the night song of a single cricket, recorded in the Zone of Silence, a desert area in northern Mexico.
Similarly in INUMAKI, ESUZAKI by Ludwig Berger an Inumaki tree is heard minutely through an attached contact microphone creaking and chanting during strong winds in the forest of the Esuzaki Island in Wakayama, Japan.
Claudio Landolt, by contrast, offers the listeners in VORDERGLÄRNISCH. BERGPORTRÄT a multi-layered, poetic and sonorous listening journey of airborne and structure-borne sound recordings, speech memos, and seismic waves on and within the mountain. The resulting sound piece breaks genre boundaries, combines phonographic nature recordings with currents of drone music and neoclassicism. The composition SABETTA is based on field recordings from Santa Elisabetta, a small village in the interior of Sicily. The ambient piece that builds on these recordings searches for ephemeral resonant spaces of the captured soundscape and reflects the scintillating glow of Sicilian forest fires in the summer of 2021.
